Once I was a fisher, plied my trade on a swelling sea,
rode the flood tide above shifting sand,
skimming the breakers, let my hollowed boat run free
My catch fed my family on this island
Once I was a fisher, now my sea dies I feel great grief,
losing a livelihood and the food in my hands.
Seven hundred tonnes of oil spilled upon Rennell reef,
killed the fish around these Solomon Islands
Once I was a fisher, in a paradise lost to contamination,
only adding to ecological problems on the land.
Mass logging, bauxite mining ruined this island nation;
destroyed our forests, not as god had planned.
Once I was a fisher, with trees to build a canoe or boat,
now just soil erosion and polluted streams.
Nowhere left to turn for help to keep us fishers afloat,
Nothing but the ghosts of shattered dreams.
