Evil is a fluid term. What is wrong to one man is holiness in another. Surely to the caliphates, the Hospitaller were as evil to them, as they were to the knights.
To know cruelty appropriately, we must know that the concept of "original sin" is not quite clear. Perhaps man is always akin to his constant greed, but it is always possible from someone to break from it. Just as all of our actions are evil, all of them are good.
