ALGORITHM
Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi formerly Latinised as Algoritmi, was a Persian scholar who created erudite works on mathematics, astronomy, and geography under the patronage of the Caliph Al-Ma'mun of the Abbasid Caliphate.
Algoritmi was appointed as the astronomer and head of the library of the House of Wisdom in Baghdad around 820 AD.
Al-Khwarizmi's popularised algebra in his treatise The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing, circa 813–833 AD which presented the first systematic solution of linear and quadratic equations.
The term algebra itself comes from the title of his book (specifically the word al-jabr meaning ‘completion’ or ‘rejoining’). His name gave rise to the terms Algorism and algorithm and is also the origin of the Spanish word guarismo and Portuguese algarismo, both of which mean digit.
