A message, I am assuming, not to be confused with William C. Chittick's application of the famed 'Page 99 Test' to his latest book "Divine Love: Islamic Literature and the Path to God" In answer to the question, "Who is William C. Chittick?", he is a professor of religious studies at Stony Brook University, and a leading translator and interpreter of classical Islamic texts. His books include 'The Sufi Path of Love' and 'In Search of the Lost Heart'.
However, just in case the music is not the message and this particular messenger not wishing to be shot at dawn due to a dearth of alternative clarity of possibility, then here goes:-
"The book provides a survey of writings on divine love in both Arabic and Persian up to the year 1200 by the Islamic poet Rumi, born in 1207. It is divided into three parts: the origin of love, the life of love, and the goal of love. It has nine chapters, three in each part. Page 99 is found toward the end of Chapter 2, 'The Story of Love'. The chapter in question describes how a number of Muslim theologians read the Qur’an as the account of an eternal love affair between God and man, however the majority of page 99 is taken up by the continuation of a quote from early twelfth century Persian writer Maybudi, who completed a ten-volume Persian commentary on the Qur’an in circa 1130. Maybudi begins his theme with the comment, “The example given of utmost mercy is the mercy of mothers, but God’s mercy toward His servants is more than that, and His love is not like their love."
The Page 99 Test according to the thoughts of British author Ford Madox Ford, "Open the book to page ninety-nine and read, and the quality of the whole will be revealed to you."
Ford Madox Ford, born Ford Hermann Hueffer in 1873, was an English novelist, poet, critic and editor whose journals, The English Review and The Transatlantic Review, were instrumental in the development of early 20th-century English literature, he died in 1939.
