The first appearance of this poem entitled 'Fiddlers' Green (in published form) was in a 1923 Cavalry Journel,
Its origin and author is unknown.
Although historical research indicates that it may have originated in Ireland,it was believed to have found
roots in the United States Cavalry Units in the post Civil War period and was first sang by the to troopers of
the 6th & 7th Cavalry Regiments.
Halfway down the trail to Hell
In a shady meadow green
Are the Souls of all the dead Troopers camped
Near a good old time canteen
And this internal resting place is
Known as Fiddlers Green
Marching past straight through to hell,
The Infantry are seen
Accompanied by the engineers,
Artillery and Marines
Form none but the shades of Cavalrymen
Dismount at Fiddlers Green
Though some go curving down the trail
To seek a warmer scene,
No Trooper ever gets to Hell
Ere he's emptied his canteen,
And so rides back to drink again
With friends at Fiddlers Green
And so when man and horse go down
Beneath a sabre keen,
Or on roaring charge of fierce melee
You stop a bullet clean
And the hostilities come to get your scalp
Just empty your canteen,
And put your pistol to your head
And go to Fiddlers Green Fiddlers Green is a legendary imagined afterlife where there is a perpetual mirth,a fiddle that never stops playing,
and dancers that never tire, even though its origins are obscure some point to the Greek myth of "Elysian Fields" as
a potential inspiration, in general the historical data suggested there is another version for Sailors, a citation from
1825 as the Sailors paradise.
