The Third Eye


The third eye is known as the gateway to higher consciousness, the window to
the universe & the windows to the soul, it may also symbolise a
state of enlightenment in Eastern and Western spiritual traditions,
the third eye referred to as 'the inner eye' .. the mystical and esoteric concept
referring to the 'Anna' Charka ,the third eye is also associated with clairvoyance,
out of the body experiences ,visions and precognition, people who have developed
their third eye are called 'seers'.
Hinduism and Buddhism use the third eye as a symbolism of enlightenment,it is referred
to as 'the eye of knowledge' in Indian tradition ,East Asian & Indian iconography
show the third eye as a dot,eye or mark on the forehead of dieties and other
enlightened beings.
Hindus place a 'Tilak' between the eyebrows as a representation of the third eye.
In India they place a dot in the middle of the forehead called a 'Bindi' balanced
for spiritual energy.
In Egypt an 'Aten' the sun symbol depicts the 'the third eye', Aten stands for the awakened
as the third eye that sees the 'soul within' the higher self or divine spark within.
There are two small organs in the brain known as the pituitary body and the pineal
gland.
Medical Science refers to the pineal gland as the 'atrophied third eye' ,it is said that neither
of these glands are atrophied they were once used in the past as a means for man to get
in touch with the inner worlds,his way to ingress, these glands will again serve the purpose,
Man will again possess the ability of clairvoyance by remembering how to establish a
connection to the pineal gland and the pituitary body but on a much grander scale by
connecting the pineal gland and the pituitary body with the cerebrospinal nervous
system , once this accomplished it will be under the control of man's will.

In the Charka systems the third eye is the 'sixth' Charka and is associated with the colour 'indigo',
this Charka if often referred to the avenue to wisdom, man may be able to tap into his inner
wisdom and out learning experiences into perspective,it is through this 'open brow' Chrka
that we may develop our intuition and receive visual images,

The third eye is located in the geometric centre of the brain.. there is a correlation between
this and the Great Pyramids, in the centre of the planet.,it is located directly behind the eyes,
attached to the third ventricle, it controls various biorhythms of the body and is activated by
light, the pineal gland 'the third eye' works harmoniously with the hypothalamus gland which
directs thirst,desire,hunger and the biological clock which determines the aging process.

Thank you so much for the post, this is such a vast and interesting topic it is eminently worthy of bringing back into the foreground of the Oracle Forum.

The third eye is frequently considered to be the conduit for: religious visions, clairvoyance, the ability to observe chakras (the seven centres of spiritual power in the human body, a cornerstone of Indian thinking) and auras (key element of spiritualism and some branches of alternative medicine, they are perceived emanations that surround the body of a living creature but which are regarded as an essential part of the individual), precognition, and out-of-body experiences.

In a number of instances, ancient religions used narcotic entheogenic plants to accelerate the opening of this inner ‘all-seeing’ eye.

However, this symbolism is not just limited to the better known regions of origin Middle East & North Africa (primarily Egypt Eye of Horus, but also as an eye in the outward facing palm of the hand the Hamsa elsewhere, Indian Sub-Continent or Far Eastern countries of origin, it is globally pervasive. For example it is fact that many New World civilisations were completely aware of the third eye either in the centre of the forehead or as a symbol of an eye in a hand, which appear in art, architecture and artefacts, has been somewhat neglected in the debate. In fact there are simply staggering parallels between for example the symbolism employed by the Valdivian, Quitus, Caras and Canaris civilisations in Ecuador and Egypt, in this respect. Many of the other civilisations were enthusiastic users of narcotic entheogenic plants to open up the channels, these included Pre-Inca, Inca, Aztec, Maya, Mississipian, Olmec, Toltec and Zapotec cultures.

As I said this is a simply vast topic and hopefully the New World civilisation aspect can be regarded as fresh evidence by the investigative among you and pique your desire for further enquiries.

Lobsang Rampa is the pen name of an author who wrote books about paranormal and occult themes. His best work
Is known as 'The Third Eye'. In November 1956 the book, The Third Eye, was published in the United Kingdom, it was written by a man called
Tuesday Lobsang Rampa, and it purported to relate to his experiences while growing up in 'Chokpori' Tibet, after
being sent there at the age of seven, the title of the book is derived from an operation, similar to 'trepanation'
that Rampa claimed he had undergone, in which a small hole was drilled to his forehead to arouse the third eye
and enhance powers of clairvoyance. The book describes the operation as follows;

"The instrument penetrated the bone. A very hard, clean sliver of wood had been treated by fire and herbs and slid
down so that it just entered the hole in my head, I felt stinging, tickling sensation apparently in the bridge of my
nose. It subsided and I became aware of subtle scents which I could identify. Suddenly there was a blinding flash.
For a moment the pai. Was intense, it diminished, died and was replaced by spirals of colour. As the projecting sliver
bound into place so that it could not move, the Lama Mingyar Doundop turned to me and said: You are now one of us,
For the rest of your life you will see people as they are and not as they pretend to be"

During the story Rampa sees yetis and eventually encounters a mummified body of himself from an early incarnation.
He also takes part in an initiation ceremony in which he learns that during its early history the Earth was struck by
another planet, causing Tibet to become the mountain kingdom that it is today.

Explorer and Tibetologist, Heinrich Harrer was unconvinced about the book's origins and hired a private detective from
Liverpool names Clifford Burgess to investigate Rampa .
The findings of Burgess's investigation were published in the Daily Mail in February 1958. It reported that the author
of the book was a man named 'Cyril Henry Hoskin, who had been born in Plymouth, Devon, in 1910 and was the son of
a plumber, Hoskin had never been to Tibet and spoke no Tibetan and never left the uk.

Rampa maintained for the rest of his life that The Third Eye was a true story. In his foreword in the 1964 edition of
the book, he wrote,
"I am Tuesday Lobsang Rampa, that is my only name, now my legal name, and I answer to no other"

I only have a vague memory of the Third Eye Centre. The CCA seems much larger. Did they expand it?

Now the Third Eye (Arts) Centre on Sauchiehall Street Glasgow, I visited there the year after it opened in 1976, I was living in Brussels then, but had to fly to Aberdeen via Glasgow on a work related mission. Centre for Contemporary Arts (CCA) took it over in 1992 and a friend of my son's delivered an art installation near there for Glasgow's 'City of Culture' year in 1990, he has been back a few times and says that it has expanded. This gentleman was also in the same year as Damian Hirst at art school, who has had an exhibition there.



While I am on the subject of art, may I use my reply to you to expand on a previous post, in terms of third eye imagery design:

The third eye chakra is most commonly depicted using the colour purple or a bluish purple shade. The auric color of third eye chakra energy can also be seen as translucent purple or bluish white.

Rather than being represented by its colour, it is characterised by the quality of its luminescence or soft radiance redolent of the moon light.
