Azazel Fallen Angel
Azazel, is described in Jewish legends as a demon or evil spirit but in later rabbinic literature is accorded the status of a fallen angel; the personification of uncleanness. As part of the ancient rite of Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement), Azazel was sent a scapegoat bearing the sins of the Jewish people. Two male goats were selected for the ritual, one designated by drawing lots “for the Lord,” the other “for Azazel” (Leviticus 16:8). The ritual was carried out by the high priest in the Second Temple and is described in the Mishna (the first major written collection of the Jewish oral traditions that are known as the Oral Torah). After the high priest symbolically transferred all the sins of the Jewish people to the scapegoat, the goat destined “for Azazel” was driven into the wilderness and cast over a precipice to its death.
“Aaron shall offer the bull as a sin offering for himself, and shall make atonement for himself and for his house. He shall take the two goats and set them before the Lord at the entrance of the tabernacle tent of meeting; and Aaron shall cast lots on the two goats, one lot for the Lord and the other lot for Azazel. Aaron shall present the goat on which the lot fell for the Lord, and offer it as a sin offering; but the goat on which the lot fell for Azazel shall be presented alive before the Lord to make atonement over it, that it may be sent away into the wilderness to Azazel.”
