Has anyone had a close look at the new £5 note, I was sat in a taxi holding my £5 fare in my hand deciding to add up the amount of 5's printed in the note...
Front..
I counted 35 number 5's on the front of the note, 26 down the bottom right-hand side.
1 each at both corners at the top of the note.
2 in the silver crown top.
2 in the oval shape of the queens head in the left,
and 1 in the small oblong silver shape on bottom, left hand side Back...
1 five in left bottom corner.
1 below in the smallest writing bottom left.
1 top right of note.
2 in the Queen's head, reversed,.
1 in the 'Sir Winston Churchill D.O.B. On his left shoulder 1874-1965
1 side of picture of Winston.

That's 35 fives on the front of note and 7 fives on the back of note, equal to 42 fives.

On the the statue of 'Big Ben' the clocks hands are at 3 o'clock, the time in 1940 when Churchill made his famous speech ...
'I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat'.
This can be seen in the £5 note under Churchill's picture.

Bank notes were originally issued by the Bank of England in 1694, for the purpose of providing a receipt in exchange for gold loans to the bank funding King William III’s war against France. The statement, 'I promise to pay the bearer on demand the sum of…' residing on these original notes remains on all British bank notes to this day. It literally meant anyone who held the note could take it to the Bank of England and exchange it for the equivalent value in gold coin. Sadly, since British currency moved away from the gold standard in favour of securities in 1931, it is no longer possible trade notes in for gold.

The cost of the war against Revolutionary France, had seriously depleted the Bank of England’s gold reserves, which led to the introduction of the first £5 notes in 1793. These dimensions of the notes at195 x 120mm made them much larger than today’s equivalent at 135 x 70mm and they were produced using black ink on white paper, later becoming known in common parlance as the 'White Fiver'. These bank notes were left relatively unchanged (other than some size fluctuations) until 1945 when a metal thread security feature was introduced for the first time.



The first double-sided and multi-coloured £5 note (Series B and the forerunner of today's 'Blue Fiver') was issued in 1957 and the White Fiver removed from circulation four years later in March 1961. Designed by Stephen Gooden, this new note included a watermark image for the first time which could be viewed from both sides. On the front side a portrait of a helmeted Britannia, along with an image of St. George and a dragon in the centre. While the reverse depicted a Lion holding a double-sided key; a symbol of Britain’s economic strength. This edition of the 'Fiver' continued as legal tender until June 1967.
