Re: Lamda is a form of god

Dear Xerous a belated welcome to the Oracle forum community and thank you for your post. Might I ask you to unravel the mystery Lamda for us i terms of either derivation or origin? Warm Regards Redbeck

In my defence, the nearest item I can find in a coding context, your visual coded message being my guide, is 'lambda expressions' in Java, Python, C#, C++ script whereas languages like LISP or the ML family of languages, Haskell, OCaml, and F#, use lambdas as a core concept.Lambda calculus can encode any computation.

Lambda in its primary status is the 11th letter of the Greek Alphabet depicted as an upper case inverted 'V' as below:-

Examples of the symbolic use of lowercase lambda [the right-hand symbol above] include:

• Lambda indicates the wavelength of any wave, especially in physics, electronics engineering, and mathematics.[5]
• In evolutionary algorithms, the symbol indicates the number of offspring that would be generated from a number of current population in each generation.
• Lambda indicates the radioactivity decay constant in nuclear physics and radioactivity. This constant is very simply related (by a multiplicative constant) to the half-life of any radioactive material.
• In probability theory, lambda represents the density of occurrences within a time interval, as modelled by the Poisson distribution.

So in a sense it is a godlike symbol in mathematics
