Witnesses have described the object as a green flash moving south to north for a few seconds, leaving a magnesium-white trail.
Sightings have been reported in locations including London, Hampshire, Stafford and on the east coast of England at 03:17 GMT it is the seventeenth of March, the 17th day of the 3rd month after all!
Its colour and perfect timing have prompted observers to describe it as the St Patrick's Day meteor on Twitter. We think that title has to be set in tablets of stone or at least carved into a stray meteor fragment.
It is the biggest meteor sighting recorded by the UK Meteor Observation Network, lasting for a few seconds but seen for hundreds of miles.
