The December solstice is either on 20,21,22 or 23, this year it falls on the Wednesday 21st.
The North Pole is tilted furthest from the sun, it is the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, where it
is the shortest day of the year. In the Southern Hemisphere, it is the summer solstice and the longest day of
the year.

Burning the clocks is a noteworthy Festival of Lights and art that brings the city of Brighton together to mark
"the Winter Solstice", each year, it is an antidote to the excesses of commercial Christmas.
It was started in 1994 by a community arts charity as a way to celebrate the holiday spirit regardless of people's
Beliefs.

Costumes are made from "withies" , willow cane, and tissue paper which includes a clock face that represents the
passing of time, people gather together to make lanterns from willow cane or bamboo and white tissue paper.
They carry these lanterns through the city and burn them on the beach as a token of the end of the year.
One by one people pass their handmade , combustible lanterns into a flaming bonfire, the burning lanterns carry
the hopes and dreams of the participant for the year to come.

Each year the organisers come up with a different theme related to the concept of time, ensuring new and exciting
lantern creations.
Participants of the people meet at the Corn Exchange at 5pm, from here the lanterns are checked by officials to make
sure the parade runs safely and smoothly.
With lanterns lot the spectacle begins at around 6.30pm, as the crowd of 2,000 apx, people representing all ages
makes their down New Road.
The streets are lined with an eager audience who cheer as the parade of light winds its way through the streets and
down to the shorefront, in total some 20,000 audience brave enough to see this contrasting March of white shapes
illuminating the darkness of the longest night of the year, at approximately 7.15pm the last group of the parade
arrives at the beach to the beating of the drums and the fire show springs to action.

The purpose of this event is to let your fears go and welcome to the hope in the coming year life.
