Janus God Of January

Post by hope »

January is most often associated with deep reflection, known for resolutions, the new year starts with retrospection,
regrets, then moves forwards with hope for the year ahead.

Janus the Two-headed God of January, the Roman god for which January is named, legend says that the god Saturn gave
Janus the ability to see into the future and the past.
Janus is usually depicted with having two heads that face in opposite directions, one looks back to the year departed and
the other looks forwards to the new and uncertain year ahead.

His name comes from the Latin word "Ianua" which means "door", Janus is the god of doors, gates, doorways, bridges, and
passageways, all of which symbolise beginnings and ends.

Janus also represented transition, such as the time between youth and adulthood.

All Roman gods had a job to do and Janus was a Roman god of the thread hold of a doorways etc, his job was to keep
evil spirits out of homes, buildings, shrines, schools, courtyards, and wherever there was a doorway or gate.
There were a great many doors in Ancient Rome, the people knew Janus was a busy god, keeping evil out of many places.
The Roman people took a minute each day to pray to Janus and thank him for doing his part to keep their homes safe
from evil.

I believe Hephaestus is the Greek equivalent of Vulcan, not Janus.
