Ah Packajos000 fyne poetry beyond thy symbolics, thou art as ever with others and welcome oaDavid, a centuries old attitude with a modern twist, from you too a stanza or three we seek in time. Mr P you are as ever 'with others', but my conviction is thy image is of an oriental suffusion, for rats and sheep are among the twelve animals of the Chinese Zodiac.



The rats run rings round the sheep as rather surprisingly they have first place in the cycle of twelve zodiacal animals, because the story goes that a rat was clever enough to jump onto the back of the ox in order to jump to the head of the queue of animals as they were being named.

The constant activity of rats is equated with the acquisitive pursuit of misers and thus rats are associated with money. In another Chinese legend it was rats that brought rice to people's attention as a nutritious food.

As they are the first ranked creature of twelve, there are 12 rats circling one sheep and 12 creating a pen around 5 further sheep. There are six sheep in all, as the sheep is 6th in the zodiac order.

Sheep symbolise respect for parents because lambs kneel to take their mother's milk. hence the allusion to the act of killing babes. Also the character for sheep is combined with that of 'large' which becomes the depiction of the word 'beautiful' in Chinese calligraphy.



Quite how the other legend fits as in: If rats move into a house it is a bad sign as cats will follow and indicates the house will soon be derelict and abandoned!

However, in this instance my earnest and entirely philososophical conclusion is they, the rats, cleverly enfold and protect the innocents, offering a way out of the conundrum.
