The First Man In Ireland

Post by Redbeck »

The legends of old Irish mythology are a fascinating subject especially when they are firmly intertwined with earliest Christianity related stories contained in the Book of Genesis within the Old Testament. As the holder of a solid trail of Hibernian ancestry I have no hesitation in trotting across peat bog, mountain and loch, not forgetting the Devil’s Causeway to deliver the story of Fintan MacBochra, renowned as being the first man in Ireland, to your digital door.

Fintan travelled with the granddaughter of Noah, named Cesair (pronounced 'sesser'), who survived the great flood. In a distinctly unchristian gesture, Cesair had been refused passage on the Ark by her grandfather and so decided to create three Arks of her own to escape the impending deluge. A perhaps topical tale given the appalling post- Storm Harvey conditions in Texas under incessant inundation; may whoever your God be with you.
Cesair was a mere ten years old when her foster father, a priest in Egypt, instructed her to gather together a group and set out on a voyage that might facilitate their escape from the imminent flood that was to soon follow. Following her priestly father’s advice, she built a fleet of three ships which she crewed with as many capable women as she could identify, each possessing a different skills. Finally, when her own father Bith was also refused entry onto Noah’s Ark, along with Fintan MacBochra and Ladra, Cesair offered these three men a berth aboard her own fleet to safety under the strict proviso that they acknowledged her leadership as commander throughout their time together!

They set sail for the distant mist-locked land of destiny known as 'Inis Fail', otherwise known as present day Ireland. The sailed in the hope that since it was said that Ireland had yet to be populated by any humans that no sin could have ever been committed there, and so it would provide a safe place beyond the flood major which was believed to have been sent by the Gods to cleanse the world of all evil.

Their incredible journey was extremely perilous and it was said to have taken them seven years to navigate their way from the far end of the Mediterranean, possibly the Black Sea, until they finally they arrived in Ireland. This was in the year 2361 BC according to 'The Annals of the Four Masters', however only one ship had survived this epic odyssey, which containined fifty women and three men. Among the survivors was Fintan MacBochra.

They decided to divide the women into three groups, while each group was to take one of the surviving men to populate different parts of this new land. They also divided up the sheep they had the foresight to bring with them (the first sheep to arrive Ireland). Cesair allocated herself to Fintan's group. Banba, a great warrior woman, was the leader of Ladra's group.

A significant physical burden that had been placed onto these beleaguered men! And finally when both of his male companions on the journey died after the voyage, it was left to Fintan to populate the new island alone, with the fifty women for whom he was now responsible. Faced with such a huge task he did what might have been expected for the sake of his longevity and santity. He fled!

Fintan travelled deep into the Irish forests and hid out in a mountain cave in Tul Tuinne, near the River Shannon in Tipperary. Having inherited the ability to shape-shift a syndrome also prevalent in Norse mythology, when the flood eventually struck Ireland, probably in the form of a major tsunami, he adopted the form of a salmon fish, and then a hawk, thus surviving in Ireland for over five thousand years.

Cesair was broken-hearted at having been abandoned by her great love, for that is what Fintan had become to her in the intervening years and died shortly afterwards. As for the remaining women they were at the mercy of the great tidal wave that flooded the lower ground in Ireland and were all washed away in the flood, all apart from Banba. Legend recalls that Banba and Fintan, the only two to survive on wet and dry land, later gave existence to the mysterious and supernatural Formorians.

By this time Fintan had developed his original gift of 'shape-shifting' to such an extent that he was easily able to transform from one creature to the next. It is said that he gained much of his wisdom by being able to communicate with animals, and especially by taking their physical form.

Fintan means 'the wise' and Bochra means 'the sea', therefore the connection that Fintan had with the great oceans is of paramount importance, and he may have even been a son of the seas.

Such was his longevity that he observed much of the history and events of old Ireland unfold before him, becoming besides a super-stud very knowledgeable of the ways of mankind. He was a bard of the ages, a sage, a seer, and a person of magnificent knowledge and wisdom.

He advised the Kings of Ireland. He helped the Firbolg King Eochaid Mac Eirc when the Tuatha de Dannan attacked and also fought in the first battle of Moytura.

It was not until the advent of Saint Patrick and Christianity in Ireland that Fintan finally shuffled out of this mortal realm.

The oldest man in the Bible.

Methuselah, "man of dart/spear" ,or alternatively "his death shall bring judgement" is the man reported
to have lived the longest at the age of 969 in the Hebrew Bible.
Extra Bibical tradition maintains that he died on the 11th of Cheshvan of the year of 1656AM )Anno Mundi,
after creation, seven days before the beginning of the Great Flood. Methuselah was the so of Epoch, the
father of Lamech, and the grandfather of Noah.

Methuselah is mentioned in one passage in the Hebrew Bible, Genisis 5:21-27, as part of the genealogy
linking Adam to Noah. The genealogy is repeated, without the chronology, at 1:3, and at Luke 3:37.

The following is taken from the King James Version of the Bible;
21 And Enoch lived sixty and five years and begat Methuselah:
22 And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.
23 And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years:
24 And Enoch walked with God and he (was) not so God took him.
25 And Methuselah lived a hundred eighty and seven years, begat Lamech.
26 And Methuselah lived after he begat Lamech seven hundred eighty and two years. And begat sons and
daughters:
27 And all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty and nine years.

The name "Methusealarity" a portmanteau of Methuselah and singularity, was coined by Aubrey D Grey to
mean a future point of time when all of the medical conditions that cause human death would be eliminated,
and death would only occur by accident or homicide.

Sarah or Sarai, The oldest Woman in the Bible

Sarah was the wife and half-sister or niece of Abraham. Both have Terah as their father(or grandfather)
and later became the parents of Isaac. Originally name Sarai which means "my princess", her name was
changed to Sarah meaning "princess" after a covenant with God. She appears on the Bible Timeline from
1986 BC to 1859 BC( (127 years)

Originally named Abram and Sarai, Abraham and Sarah were dwellers from Ur, presently known as Iraq.
They got married before leaving Canaan after following God's command.

Sarah was described as exceptionally beautiful even as she aged. But aside from her attractiveness,
Sarai was also barren until her covenant with God wherein God promised to give her a child. It was
because of this covenant that her name was changed to Sarah. True to his word, Sarah got pregnant
and gave birth to the prophet Isaac.

Isaac became the father of Jacob, later renamed as Israel by God. This fact makes Sarah one of the
mothers of the Israelites and Jesus Christ.

Sarah died at the age 127 and was thought to be buried in Kiryat Arba, presently located in Hebron.
The cave of Machpelah, commonly known today as the Cave of Patriarchs or the Sanctuary of Abraham
to the Muslims is believed to be at he burial place of Abraham and Sarah, their son Isaac and his wife
Rebecca, and their grandson Jacob and his wife Leah. The cave was purchased by Abraham from the
Hittite named Ephron. This site is now considered the second holiest place for the Jews and is also
honoured by both the Muslims and the Christians.

Welcome to the Forum Leralic, it's good to have you aboard, where's me buccaneers, talking of pirates and indeed sticking with the context of Ireland, what about Grace O’Malley, the 16th Century Pirate Queen of Ireland. That is despite my love for San Juan, which is capital of Puerto Rico and founded by Spanish settlers from Caparra in 1521, just 15 years after Columbus’s momentous first voyage. Interestingly enough San Juan was only ever taken and occupied by Dutch pirates for any length of time in 1625. So taken am I, that I have included a picture.

Anyway moving rapidly on to Grace, a legend as they say.

Grace O’Malley was born in Ireland in around 1530, daughter of wealthy nobleman and sea trader Owen O'Malley. Upon his death, she inherited his large shipping and trading business. She rejected the typical role of the sixteenth century woman from the beginning, opting to follow a life on the sea with the O'Malley trading ships fleet. Income from shipping, along with land bequeathed by her mother, enabled Ms O'Malley to become rich and reasonably powerful.

During an era when Ireland was ruled by dozens of local chieftains, O’Malle, also known in legends as Granuaile, literally commanded hundreds of men on around 20 ships conducting raids on rival clans and merchant ships. She also frequently ran foul of government officials, who made repeated attempts to rein in her activity.

Under the English government policies in place at the time, what were semi-autonomous Irish princes and lords were mostly left alone to administer their territories as they felt appropriate. However this hands-off approach was to change significantly over the course of O'Malley's life, for as the Tudor conquest of Ireland gathered momentum, more and more Irish lands came under their jurisdiction.

The O'Malleys were among the few seafaring families on the west coast of Ireland, and they built a row of castles facing the sea to protect their lands. Sailing from their base at Rockfleet Castle, they reportedly attacked ships and fortresses along the shoreline, plundered Scotland’s outlying islands, and taxed all those who fished off their coasts, which included fishermen from as far away as England. O'Malley's ships would stop and board traders and demand either cash or a portion of the cargo in exchange for safe passage during the rest of the voyage to Galway. Any form of resistance was frequently met with violence and even murder. Nevertheless in Irish historical terms Grace O'Malley, continues to be revered as a great defender of national pride against the English.
