Early In the 18th Century there was a rapid growth in education for women.
Secondary schools only began to flourish in the 1800's and were called academies.
The young ladies Academy served as a 'model' for many female academies that rose in the early 19th century.
With the increasing number of females academies, the term 'Seminary' also became popular and referred to
female schools which were more serious than a finishing schools.
The Female Seminary Movement began in around 1815 and was led by women such as Catherine Beecher, Mary Lynn and Emma Willard.
The goal of these women was to form schools that would offer women an education equal to that of men by
holding their pupils to the same high standards.
These are of the most remarkable women of the 1800's;
Elizabeth Garrett(1836-1917)
Elizabeth was the first female doctor tom quality in England, she opened a school of medicine,
and paved the way for women's education in Britain.
She was born in Whitechapel,London, the daughter of a pawnbroker with 12 children and was
given a good education and decided to become a doctor after meeting Dr Elizabeth Blackwell,
the first female doctor to graduate in the United States.
Sara Allen Plummer(1836-1923)
Sara was a famous botanist, she was born in Maine and educated in Massachusetts , she established
herself as an art teacher , like many pioneer women Sara was eager to bring what, she called,
culture, to the west.
Sara relished the outdoor, which later led her to botany, botany didn't just intrigue and entertain
Sara, it deeply affected her personal life.
Isabella Tod(1836-1896)
Isabella was a 'women's rights' campaigner and politician of Ireland, she campaigned for the repeal
of The Contagious Diseases Acts, these acts allowed fro state regulation of prostitutes in areas
In which The British Army was stationed, she was on executive committee of Ladies National
Association for the Repeal of Contagious Diseases Acts until 1889 and an organiser of the Liberal
Women's Unionists Association.
Mary Gurney(1836-1917
Mary was a school teacher and worked tirelessly for the better education of women for all her life
along with her sister and a friend she established The Girls Public Days School Company, later to
become a trust.
The GPDSC company founded thirty schools, met also opened the Maria Grey Training Company
which opens 90 grammar schools insisting the girls should study the same subjects as men and sit
the same examinations.
The GPDSC company still runs today, running 26 schools which continue the work begun by Mary
who stayed unmarried.
Emeline Roberts Jones(1836-1916)
Emeline was the first woman to practise dentistry in the United States, her husband,Daniel
Jones, also a dentist, believed that dentistry was not a suitable career for a woman, he thought
them to be frail and clumsy with their fingers.
However she studied in secret and after she showed Dainel a two-quart jug of several hundred
teeth she had secretly filled and extracted, he finally allowed her to assist him, after his death in
1964, she continued to practice herself.
Louise Michel(1830-1905)
The amazing thing is that all these women were born on !1836!
Louise claimed to be born on 1836, rather than 1830,for vanity reasons maybe, which was hard to prove as her early
records were destroyed by a fire.
No one ever knew her original birthdate.
The Amazing thing is all of these women were born on 'The auspicious' date of 1836!!!
A common culture with Aliens "A proton" is 1,836 times heavier than an Electron and the number -1836-
Would have the same connotations to any intelligence.
