The story goes that on one day a Scotsman was walking through the locality and had to cross a stream that ran that way.
Following heavy rain, the stream was exceptionally high, to keep his stockings dry, the poor man was obliged to "doff"
them, since that day he took off his cockers(as stockings were called across the border) the name has stuck.
The original Doffcocker Inn goes back to 1900 but shortly replaces with the present building that stands today.
The Doffcocker Inn is a pleasant but unremarkable building from outside, but to those in the know it is a "calendar pub"
designed with mysterious numerical precision.
The pub has intrigued its punters for more than a century with its curious design philosophy based on the numbers that
mark the passage of our lives.
It's windows contain 365 panes of glass, one for each day of the year, inside, the rooms are divided by 52 doors, one for
every week.
It does not stop there , the pub has 28 rooms for each day in a four week month, 12 rooms in the cellar for each month
of the year and 7 bedrooms for each day of the week.
Counting the cellar as one, the building has 4 floors, one for each season, or to represent the number of week in a month.
Landlord. Jonh Bradford, said he does not know why the pub was built in such a way but it facilities his regulars.
He said "I've never found 100 per cent proof that the pub was designed intentionally as a calendar pub, buy you try
telling them lot that, when I first heard about it I wasn't sure it was true, but then I saw a tv programme about another
place built in the same way.

The Doffcocker Inn was built in 1901 on the site of an older pub of the same name, but the reasoning behind the calendar
Design remains a mystery.
Yet the building was thought to have been a "poor house" before,
